PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION
The Palomar StarLux® Evolves Beyond Lasers
The new Palomar StarLux® has emerged as the next generation Pulsed Light System for cosmetic procedures. In June 2005, we incorporated the StarLux® into our large practice of lasers. The result was the world's best modality for treating unwanted hair, vascular lesions and pigmented spots. The combination of integrated skin cooling, high pulse energy, tunable pulse duration, speed, and a wide range of handpieces tailored for specific indications makes this device very useful. At Premier Laser Center, we were among the first in the US to offer permanent hair reduction back in January 1997, by introducing the Palomar Epi-laser to the South. A few years later, we followed that with the next generation lasers, the Palomar E-2000, the Palomar SLP-1000 diode laser, and later, the Palomar ESTELUX pulse light system. We are excited about the StarLux®.

The Speed of the StarLux®
The Palomar StarLux® is able to deliver high energy to the desired area. The new, larger sized treatment tip, and faster pulse rates, greatly reduce treatment time.

The Comfort of the StarLux®
The Palomar StarLux® uses active cooling through the handpiece's sapphire tip to cool the skin to 4 degrees centigrade. This cooling permits the operator to deliver high energy pulses while providing maximum comfort and safety to the patient. Patients are particularly pleased with its efficient effect on hair removal without the discomfort associated with some of our older lasers.

The Safety of the StarLux®
Palomar's unique technology ensures a constant, smooth beam throughout each pulse, without the "power spikes" that other technologies use, which can cause pain and skin damage. The full, steady coverage of the treated area by the uniform beam allows faster permanent reduction of hair in fewer treatments, as well as increased patient safety and comfort.

Permanent hair reduction is defined as a long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs that grow back after a treatment regime. Such hair reduction after at least one complete growth cycle (2-4 months, depending on anatomical location) is considered permanent hair reduction. Clinical trials performed at Massachusetts General Hospital have shown that most people treated with appropriate energies achieve 10-20% permanent hair reduction following each treatment.

How Does The Palomar StarLux® System Remove Hair?
Intense light emitted by the Palomar StarLux® System is absorbed by the dark pigment found in hair follicles. The ligh is "pulsed," or turned on, for only a fraction of a second, just long enough to disable the follicle. While the light energy is delivered, the unique contact-colling handpiece helps protect the skin through conductive cooling.

Does It Hurt?
While you may feel a slight tingling sensation, most people tolerate the procedure very well. Because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, you may choose to have a topical anesthetic applied to increase comfort during the procedure

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Multiple treatments are generally required. The actual number depends on the color of your hair and skin, as well as factors such as hormone levels and hair follicle size. Your hair removal consultant will develop a treatment program that best fulfills your individual needs.

What Should I Expect After Treatment?
After-effects vary from patient to patient. Typically, within several minutes, the treated area may become slightly red and puffy. This reaction subsides quickly, usually within a day. Since the Palomar StarLux® does not cut the skin in any way, you can return to normal activity immediately. Most hairs fall out within 7-30 days of the treatment. Additional treatments can be scheduled every 2-3 months, until the desired endpoint is reached.

Palomar StarLux® Technology - Effective and Gentle

Contact Cooling Adds Comfort And Protection
While other hair removal methods may cause skin irritation, Palomar's unique sub-zero contact-cooling handpiece provides added protection during treatment. Gentle compression of the skin by its cool, wide sapphire surface brings laser energy closer to the parts of the follicle that are responsible for hair growth.

Deeper is Better Because...
By delivering laser energy deep into the skin, the Palomar StarLux® System disables the parts of the follicle that produce hair, resulting in permanent hair reduction.

Hair Growth Cycles
Anagen Phase Catagen Phase Telogen Phase
Anagen is the active phase of hair growth, and may last for up to several years depending on the body area. At any given time, most of our body hair is in this part of the hair-growth cycle. During this brief phase, the hair bulb regresses and begins to shrink. At the end of this resting phase, which typically lasts for several months, hair is released from the shriveled follicles and the Anagen Phase begins again.
